As the world leader and inventor of Reinforced Earth® MSE wall technology, Terre Armée companies apply the same level of professionalism and engineering care for reinforced steep slopes as for vertical Reinforced Earth® structures.
Slopes constructed as soil retaining structures are typically constructed at an angle to the horizontal between 45° and 76°. These reinforced soil structures are often called Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS) or Geosynthetic Reinforced Slopes (GRS) by engineers.
Our group’s success in this field was confirmed by the construction of a world record-breaking RSS structure at a height of more than 100 meters.
Slope front selection
We offer both steel mesh and geosynthetic coating front surface solutions. These options allow the construction of vegetated “green” slopes, which we call ArmaGreen®, or natural mineral-looking ArmaStone® slopes.
Reinforcement selection
Geosynthetic reinforcements can be either in the form of geosynthetic strips (GeoStrap® and EcoStrap®) or high-performance geogrids called ArmaGrid®.
GeoStrap®
These reinforcements are made of high-strength polyester (PET) tendons encased in a polyethylene sheath. It can adapt to environments where chlorides and sulfates are present or with low pH.
EcoStrap®
These reinforcements are made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) tendons in a polyethylene sheath. Recycled concrete can be used even in the presence of lime or cement and in high pH environments.
ArmaGrid®
Uniaxial or biaxial geogrid reinforcement is produced in both PET and polypropylene (PP), both of which are ideal for constructing both permanent and temporary reinforced ground slopes.
Metallic (steel) soil reinforcements are the best solution in certain situations and are supplied in our signature high-adhesion reinforcement strips.
Applications
Reinforced Slopes are frequently constructed to support and protect linear infrastructure, including highways, railways and airports. It is widely used in landfills and waste storage areas.
Additionally, these structures need to be sloped to control natural gravity risks such as rockfalls, landslides, avalanches and hydraulic erosion, and to protect against coastal and river floods.
Steep slopes are also constructed to eliminate human-caused risks such as explosions, noise and traffic protection.
Benefits of Reinforced Soil Slopes
- Sustainability with minimal or no concrete consumption.
- Biodiversity by building green slopes or slopes with mineral surfaces.
- Our solutions offer applicators a wide range of acceptable fill materials, including field-acquired fills, recycled materials or quarry-bred fills.

TerraNail™
Terre Armée and subsidiary companies offer TerraNail™, for installing passive soil and rock anchoring and stabilization systems. This solution is widely specified by geotechincal engineers for builders and earthworkers to install adequate measures to ensure stability and take control of embankment soil and rock displacement, foundation instability, mass erosion, and retention facing displacements.
