Shored MSE structures (SMSE) are now widely sought by engineers that are challenged to widen or rehabilitate existing infrastructure.
Our innovative solution is TerraLink®. Developed by Terre Armée, this solution solves these challenges to build new earth-retained structures that front existing structures where limited room for expansion is available.
TerraLink® shored MSE structures
Shored Reinforced Earth (TerraLink) structures are widely used by engineers who have to expand or rehabilitate existing infrastructure. This innovative solution is the most effective solution in cases where there is not enough space for expansion and it is necessary to build new fill retaining structures in front of existing structures or slopes.
Road and railway widenings
The constant increase in road and railay traffic in urban areas makes the existing infrastructure inadequate. Using our TerraLink® solution, it is possible to expand infrastructure with building additions, relieve traffic bottlenecks and stabilize existing structures.
Ground shoring
TerraLink® is a cost-effective way to construct a conventional fill retaining structure or shoring system in restrictive proximity to an existing slope or structure. Typical design concepts include significant earthworks and renovations through excavation and overfill. TerraLink offers an excellent alternative by reducing these high costs.
The TerraLink® solution
The components are similar to our typical Reinforced Earth® wall solution:
•Surface panels made of precast concrete
•Steel or geosynthetic soil reinforcements connected to the panels
•Selected fill
• Connections with soil nails
The TerraLink™ connections
Our solution is intended to link an existing structure with the new TerraLink® structure. These structures are designed with either one, or a combination of two different methods for linking:
> Friction link
Successive reinforcement layers,
- are attached to the back face of the new structure or
- are attached to the front face of the existing structure.
> Direct link
The reinforcements at both structure boundaries are directly connected to each other.
Design approach
In TerraLink® design, the characteristics of the existing structure or the condition of the existing slope (slope angle, bedrock type, etc.), the stability of the nailed structure within itself, and the analysis of the final structure to be formed play a key role.
Benefits
Cost savings
Cost savings
Offering an alternative for narrow areas, the solution minimizes excavation-filling amounts.
Optimization of materials
Optimization of materials
Being able to choose from surface elements, reinforcement and fill types ensures the most suitable design for each project.
Finished appearance
Finished appearance
A natural “green” look is also possible, as well as numerous options for surface panels.
Minimal interruption to traffic
Minimal interruption to traffic
While a standard retaining wall requires the dismantling of the existing structure, this system keeps the existing structure in place and keeps traffic active during construction.
Rapid construction
Rapid construction
The construction is fast. The materials are delivered to the site on time and wall installation can proceed directly.
Reliability
Reliability
The internal strength and overall stability of this composite structure provide significant static and dynamic load carrying capacity.
Adaptation to existing structure
Adaptation to existing structure
TerraLink wall can be designed to suit different existing situations, whether it is an existing reinforced eath wall or a natural hillside such as sloping land or bedrock.
Reduced environmental footprint
Reduced environmental footprint
It uses less materials, requires less space and produces less CO2 than traditional construction methods.
Limited land use
Limited land use
TerraLink structures require minimal land use during construction; This is a great advantage in projects that need to be adapted to existing infrastructure and dense urban life.
